Worthington Tour of Homes and Gardens 2010

The Home and Garden Tour for 2010 will be full of "wow!" Guests will visit the historic Colonial Hills neighborhood of Worthington. Our tour will tell the story of the evolution of the neighborhood, from the first phase in the early 1940’s through the last phase in the late 1950’s. To round out the tour, George Campbell, president of the Colonial Hills Civic Association, will give a presentation on the history of Colonial Hills at one of the homes.

In the early 1940s, the original plat for Colonial Hills and Dales was to be a community to house workers for the Curtis Wright aircraft plant. They were to be partially pre-fabricated at a minimum cost of $5,400. By the beginning of 1943, the first phase of 50 homes were ready to be rented out and the Defense Homes Corporation was planning a total of 184 two-bedroom and 16 three-bedroom more homes to be available to rent. At war’s end, these were sold to their renter occupants or war veterans.

Tickets may be purchased in advance for $10 at the Old Rectory, 50 W. New England Ave. on Tuesday through Friday from 1-4 PM and on Saturday from 10 AM - 2 PM. Tickets may also be purchased in advance at "Fritzy Jacobs", at 635 N. High St. in Worthington, open Monday through Friday from 10-6, on Saturday from 10-5 and on Sunday from 11-4 . Tickets are sometimes sold at the Saturday Farmer’s Market on High St. during June.

On tour day, Sunday, July 11, tickets will be available for $12 each at the Old Rectory, Fritzy Jacobs and at the Selby Shelter House in Colonial Hills.
