 n a fully staged production that's a joyful and accessible introduction to
  live orchestral music for young audiences and families. Music Director An
 toine T. Clark and the WCO\, narrator Jeff Horst\, and choreographer Sarah
  Hixon bring the story to life\, giving every character a vivid new dimens
 ion on stage. Prokofiev's genius was to give each character their own inst
 rument: brave Peter speaks through the strings\, the excitable bird throug
 h the flute\, the amusing duck through the oboe\, the sneaky cat through t
 he clarinet\, the grumpy grandfather through the bassoon\, and the fearsom
 e wolf through three French horns. As children follow the story\, they dis
 cover the orchestra — and Hixon Dance gives every musical character a bo
 dy to match. Prokofiev composed the piece in just nine days in 1936\, and 
 at its first informal run-through for a dozen children in Moscow\, the roo
 m went completely silent for the full twenty-four minutes. When it ended\,
  the kids clamored for more\, and Prokofiev had to play the final march th
 ree times over. Nearly ninety years later\, that magic is still very much
