Language and Cultural
Schools
Worthington is home to two schools that provide
language and cultural instruction for Japanese and
Chinese children whose families live in Worthington or
throughout the central Ohio area. The Columbus Japanese Language School was founded in
April 1980 by Japanese parents who wanted to help their
children keep up with their Japanese language skills
while they lived in the U.S. It began with
14 elementary school children and three teachers. Today,
550 students gather at Granby Elementary and McCord
Middle School every Saturday in an atmosphere close to
their schools at home to learn the standard curriculum
required of students in Japan. The school is one of 61
Japanese weekend schools in America approved by the
Japanese Ministry of Education and one of the largest of
its kind in the world. Most students are children of
Japanese families assigned to work at an American
division of Japanese-owned companies. To learn more,
contact the school office at 436-5796.
The Ohio Contemporary Chinese School (OCCS) introduces the Chinese language and culture to the
overseas Chinese, their children and American people.
The school believes the insight of cultural diversity
strengthens mutual understanding and appreciation of
these cultures. The school, held on Sunday afternoons at
Perry Middle School, teaches Chinese language classes on
a yearly basis at the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten,
beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. The school
also has math and cultural classes, which include chess,
dance, drawing and flute instruction. For further
